Ground loop
Definition
An error caused by a signal circuit being connected to earth at more than one point, where the potential difference drives current through the signal wiring.
Shows up as noise, drift, or an offset that changes when nearby equipment runs. The fix is a single ground reference per circuit, or a signal isolator where a second ground cannot be removed.
A required protective equipment ground is never lifted to solve a signal problem.
