The calculators

These calculators are estimating and checking aids, not design tools. Results are unverified, carry no warranty, and are not engineering advice for any specific installation. Every result must be independently checked by a qualified person against the applicable codes, standards, and manufacturer data before it is relied on. Do not use any result on this site as the sole basis for sizing, protecting, installing, or operating equipment.

Each calculator states the assumptions built into its arithmetic and lists what it does not account for. Those statements are part of the result. A number taken from a calculator without reading them is a number you cannot defend.

• Calculators show their arithmetic on purpose. Check the working rather than trusting the output.
• Where a calculator reads a code table, it displays the value it used so a disagreement with your own code book is immediately visible.
• A calculator result is one input to a decision. Ampacity, overcurrent protection, terminal temperature ratings, short-circuit withstand, and mechanical constraints are separate requirements, and satisfying one does not satisfy the others.
• No calculator here has been independently verified, certified, or validated by any third party.

The reference tables

Reference tables here are reproduced for convenience and may not match the edition of the code or standard adopted in your jurisdiction. They are not a substitute for the published document. Verify every value against the current adopted edition and the manufacturer data for the specific product before using it in a design, an installation, or an inspection.

Code tables are revised between editions, and jurisdictions adopt editions at different times. The copy of the code adopted where the work is performed is the one that governs. A table reproduced on a website never is.

Code compliance

Code compliance is determined by the authority having jurisdiction and by the edition of the code adopted where the work is performed. Nothing on this site determines compliance, approves an installation, or substitutes for a design prepared and sealed by a qualified engineer where one is required.

Safety

Work on energized industrial equipment carries risk of injury or death. Follow NFPA 70E, your employer’s electrical safety program, and lockout/tagout procedures. Nothing here replaces qualified supervision.

All content, calculators, and tables are provided as they are, without warranty of any kind, express or implied. Reasonable care goes into accuracy and mistakes still happen. If you find one, report it and it will be corrected.
