Variable Frequency Drive

Definition

A drive that varies motor speed by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to it.

Allows a pump to modulate rather than cycle, at the cost of heat, harmonics, and a maintenance item at an unattended site. Its switching output is also the most common source of induced noise on nearby instrument cable.

Also known as: variable speed drive, VSD, inverter.
