Instrumentation

Turndown

Definition

The ratio between the largest and smallest measurement an instrument can make within its stated accuracy.

A meter with 10:1 turndown sized for 1000 gpm is not trustworthy below 100 gpm. Sizing on velocity rather than on pipe size is what keeps a meter inside its usable range.

Also known as: rangeability.
