PLC
Programmable Logic Controller
Definition
A ruggedized industrial computer that reads field inputs, solves a control program, and drives outputs on a repeating, deterministic cycle.
A PLC is built for predictability and uptime rather than raw speed. It runs a fixed scan, tolerates heat, vibration, and electrical noise, and is expected to run for years without a restart.
It replaced racks of hardwired relay logic, which is why its programming languages and much of its vocabulary still borrow from relay drawings.
Also known as: programmable logic controller, programmable controller.
