Remote Terminal Unit

Definition

A controller at a remote site, optimized for low power, a wide temperature range, and reporting over a constrained link such as radio or cellular.

In water and wastewater, most lift station RTUs are simply small PLCs in a remote panel. What makes them an RTU is the role and the communication constraints, not a different kind of hardware.
