Loop powered

Definition

A transmitter that draws its operating power from the same two wires that carry its 4-20 mA signal, normally from a 24 VDC supply.

Because it never receives more than the minimum signal current, a loop-powered device has to run on less than 4 mA. Three-wire and four-wire devices take separate power because they need more than that.

Also known as: two-wire transmitter.
