Deadband

Definition

A gap between the value that activates something and the value that deactivates it, so a measurement sitting on the threshold does not chatter.

Set it wider than the normal noise on the signal. The same idea, applied to alarms, removes an enormous share of nuisance annunciations.

Also known as: hysteresis.
