A scheduling container in a controller. A continuous task runs whenever the processor is free; a periodic task runs on a fixed interval; an event task runs on a trigger.
Periodic tasks are how a PID loop gets a consistent execution rate. Schedule one too aggressively and it starves the continuous task, or overlaps itself and faults the controller.
