Integral windup

Definition

The condition where a PID output is saturated but the integral term keeps accumulating, so the loop massively overshoots when the process finally responds.

Typical of a pump asked to hold pressure against a closed valve. Anti-windup, realistic output limits, and holding the integral when the loop is not in control all prevent it.

Also known as: reset windup.
