Instrumentation

False echo

Definition

A reflection a level instrument receives from something that is not the liquid surface, such as a ladder, a pipe, or a bracket.

The classic symptom is a level that reads correctly through most of its range and then locks onto a fixed value. An echo mapping scan with the vessel empty teaches the instrument to ignore the fixed reflections.
