Live zero

Definition

A signal scheme where the bottom of the range is a non-zero value, so a genuine zero reading is distinguishable from a dead circuit.

In a 4-20 mA loop the live zero is 4 mA. Without it, an empty tank and a cut wire would look identical to the receiving device.
