Our Founder | Dave Curry

It's been over 40 years since a vigorous and enterprising engineer with Robertshaw Industrial Products Company decided to begin his own instrumentation and controls company in the heart of central Florida. From humble beginnings, our founder David L. Curry began testing his entrepreneurial skills and worked toward developing what is now considered to be a respected, leading, and dynamic presence in the Systems Integration Industry: Curry Controls Company.

The depression was coming to a close, but the financial impact was still being felt by the Curry family as young Dave grew up in Macon, Georgia. He always thought the cost of a college degree was out of reach for his family, but two things would lead to his attending Auburn University and earning his Engineering Degree. The first was his love of sports. He lettered in four different sports: football, basketball, baseball, and track. He says, “I may not have been the best athlete, but I learned about hard work, perseverance, and teamwork.”

Due to the influence of wealthier families to get their kids on the roster, he didn’t make the basketball team in 10th grade. So he decided to play for his church’s basketball team that year and as fate would have it, his church team played an exhibition game against his school’s team. Dave led his church team in scoring that night, and the high school coach asked Dave to join his team. So he accepted and in his senior year, he led the team to the state championships.

While the lessons of participating in sports gave him more confidence in himself and the potential of realizing his dream of attending college, it was his Uncle Clark who pushed him even harder to pursue his dream. Working for Uncle Clark’s construction company during the summers, Dave performed back-breaking work on bridge construction on Interstate 10. “My Uncle told me he was going to work me so hard, I was going to want to go to college more than ever!” After spending the summers working 70 - 80 hours a week and making $1.10 an hour, Dave was able to save enough and had clearly gotten the message form Uncle Clark. He enrolled at Auburn.

Four years later with his degree in hand, he went to work with one of the largest system integration companies at the time: Robertshaw. After spending ten years learning about the industry he came to love, he decided to start his own company. He realized the phosphate industry in Central Florida would benefit greatly from this new technology called systems integration. Starting out of his garage, he began to introduce his product to the mining companies. “The mines starting booming at that time, so I was blessed to be in the right place at the right time with the right product.”

As Dave’s company began to grow, his hunger to serve his customers ensured decades of victories. “I’ve never backed off of a challenge. Many times we were told that we couldn’t do a project . . . can you do this? Can you find this instrument? We would always find a way to make it happen.”

...Humility, Hunger, and People Smarts

And the thing that makes the team at Curry Controls feel like a family is Dave’s long-standing approach to his employees. “Be loyal to them and they will be loyal to you. We have a dedication to do the right thing, based on a spiritual atmosphere and grounded in the golden rule, and turn the difficult issues over to the Lord.” Many of the staff have been with Dave for decades and have come to reflect his personality of humility, hunger to serve, and people smarts.

When he’s not working, you will find Dave spending time with his wife and high school sweetheart, Edris, along with their kids, four grandkids, and one great granddaughter.

He also loves to teach a Bible class at his church, and has done so for over two decades. Dave has served on the YMCA board for 30 plus years, and has been an integral part of the annual First Tee golf tournament hosted by his fellow Auburn alumni, Charles Barkley.

So if you ever wonder how Curry Controls Company has become one of the most trusted and respected companies in the integrated systems industry, you need to look no further than the heart and drive of Dave Curry.
